World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi makes history, becoming the first player ever...

Lionel Messi made history once again after becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches during Argentina’s 3-1 win over Jordan on Saturday. The Argentine captain came on as a substitute in the second half and scored from a free kick in the 80th minute.

After being fouled outside the penalty area, Messi fired a low shot past two Jordan defenders and into the left corner of the net.

This goal was his 19th in World Cup history, extending his record as the tournament’s all-time top scorer.

Another achievement for Lionel Messi

This was also the 72nd free kick goal of Messi’s career and his 12th goal for Argentina from a direct free kick.

The 39-year-old scored 123 international goals in 202 appearances for Argentina.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, with 145 international goals, has scored more in men’s international football. Before this match, Messi shared the record for scoring goals in six consecutive World Cup matches with Frenchman Just Fontaine and Brazilian legend Jairzinho. His goal against Jordan made him the first player to reach seven consecutive goals.

He rested before making any impact

Messi has been left out of the starting lineup as Argentina has already secured first place in Group J, while Jordan has already been eliminated from the tournament.

He entered in the 60th minute in place of Lautaro Martinez, who had scored earlier from a penalty kick in the first half.Messi’s late goal helped Argentina complete a 3-1 win and finish the group stage with maximum points heading into the knockout rounds.
