'Unfortunately, no': Shreyas Iyer confirms Vaibhav Suryavanshi will have to wait for his India debut

New Delhi: The wait will continue for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic debut for India after newly appointed skipper Shreyas Iyer confirmed that the 15-year-old batting sensation has not been included in the playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday.Suryavanshi was widely expected to make his international debut after his stunning rise in the rankings. Had he participated, the teenager would have become the youngest player ever to represent India in men’s international cricket, surpassing the record set by 37-year-old Sachin Tendulkar.

However, during the draw, Eyre ended the speculation before clarifying that the decision was driven by the balance of the team rather than the youngster’s preparation.“Going to the field first. It’s a new surface for us, a first in Belfast. Given the conditions, the environment and the wicket, we want to play first. We need to get used to the conditions as quickly as possible. We’ll take it one game at a time. Eyre always said you don’t have to complicate things.”When asked if Sooryavanshi would be making his debut, the skipper replied: “Unfortunately, no.”

He then reassured fans that the teenager remains firmly in India’s plans.“He (Soryavanshi) will get his chance when the time comes. For now, we will be adopting three true seamers and one all-rounder,” Iyer added.

A teenage prodigy still on the brink of history

Even though he missed his first ODI, Suryavanshi is still on the verge of rewriting the history of Indian cricket. When he makes his international debut, the left-hander will become India’s youngest-ever international cricketer, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his debut against Pakistan in 1989.The Bihar youngster earned his maiden call-up after a sensational campaign in IPL 2026 with Rajasthan Royals, where he finished as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 776 runs in 16 innings at an impressive strike rate of 237.30. He also smashed the record of 72 sixes, which is the most number of hits in a single IPL season. The teenager carried that form to India A’s tri-series series in Sri Lanka, firing 94 off just 29 balls in the final against Sri Lanka A, an innings that included the fastest fifty in the history of List A cricket as he reached the milestone in just 11 deliveries.

The dream is postponed and cannot be denied

Speaking after receiving his first call-up to the Indian national team, Suryavanshi described wearing the India jersey as the fulfillment of his life’s dream.“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and took to the ground to train: That dream has now come true. The biggest step of that journey has been completed today,” he said in a BCCI video.“I felt like I was dreaming when I saw that shirt. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined would happen.”While Indian fans will have to wait a little longer to see the teenage sensation on the international stage, Iyer’s comments made it clear that the omission was only temporary.
