Two people, including the main accused involved in the Jurua market looting case, were shot dead during a police encounter in Bihar’s Gaya on Monday.

The accused, identified as Sujit Kumar (25) and Shravan Kumar (26), both residents of Gaya, sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and were admitted to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital, Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar said.

Kumar said the two were involved in a gold looting case in Jorwa on May 27 where they stole valuable jewellery $45 lakh and shot jeweler Prabhankar Barnwal and seriously injured him. Kumar said that two pistols were recovered along with 150 grams of the looted gold after they were identified.

Acting on credible information around midnight on Monday that criminals linked to the Jurua market looting case were moving to execute a major conspiracy, a police team set up a cordon near Panahi Sand Ghat area in Amas Police Station area. The police surrounded the criminals and warned them not to surrender.

When surrounded, the criminals tried to escape and opened fire on the police. The police responded in self-defense and shot them in the legs.

The two were arrested while their three companions fled. They both confessed to their involvement in the looting of Jorwa market, the SSP said.

A police team is constantly raiding the hideouts of fleeing criminals. He added that the police are also checking the criminal history of the arrested criminals.
