SHILLONG, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said here on Monday that the northeastern region “dare to dream” in shaping its growth story, and announced that in the next few years, eight new five-star hotels are scheduled to open in his state.

Addressing the summit, he also stressed that time is “crucial” for the North-East, and “we just need to connect the dots”.
Today, the Northeast has the political will, thought process and policy to grow, and its states “have the audacity to dream,” Sangma said.
He said: “Before, we did not dare to dream, but now we dream, and this is the confidence that we would like to convey to investors looking to invest in our region.”
The ‘North East India Infrastructure Summit and Expo 2026’ will be hosted from June 15 to 16 at the Larete Performance Center in Shillong.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and many other dignitaries were also present on the podium.
“In the last eight years, our budget has increased by two times. I am confident that by 2028-29, it will grow to three times the size of what it was eight years ago,” Sangma said in his speech.
“Our capital spending, the infrastructure spending and the investment we do, has increased sixfold in the last eight years,” he said.
Sangma stressed that the state in Meghalaya is today doing something “that we had never thought of before”.

He said Meghalaya will host the National Games next year. “We are making full preparations for that.”
Sangma pointed out several buildings and other infrastructure projects being implemented in Meghalaya.
“The new assembly building is ready, our new secretariat building is being built, and maybe within a year or a year and a half, we will be able to start our administrative work from there,” Sangma said.
“Earlier, Meghalaya did not have a single five-star hotel. In the last five years, we have started two five-star hotels. You will be happy to know that in the next three-four years, eight new five-star hotels are scheduled to open, their agreements have been signed, and work has begun on four of them,” he added.
Sangma said that the domestic airport in Shillong was built but closed, and has been opened again, and it will be possible to start large commercial operations from it within the next one to one and a half years.
