One year after Air India crash, AIIB says ‘evidence is being analysed’, offers no timeline for final report

A year after the crash of Air India Flight AI-171, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has issued a statement on the progress of its investigation. The AAIB said on Friday the investigation is ongoing and remains focused on a detailed, evidence-based assessment of all factors associated with the accident, which claimed 260 lives.

On June 12, 2025, Air India AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 flying from Ahmedabad to London, crashed just about 30 seconds after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Only one person survived out of 242 people on board. Several people also died on the ground when the plane hit the hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad.

What did the Arab African Bank say?

The AAIB said it conducted the investigation in accordance with the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Regulations 2017 and recommended standards and practices under ICAO Annex 13. An initial factual report was issued on July 12, 2025.

The bank said in its update that over the past year it conducted an extensive and systematic examination of the technical, operational, organizational and human factors associated with the incident.

This includes detailed analysis of aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine components, maintenance records and operational documentation.

The agency added that the investigation was supported by accredited representatives, technical advisors and specialized experts from relevant organizations.

She said the evidence collected was currently being analyzed in an integrated way, with further specialist examinations being carried out where necessary.

The African International Bank does not provide any timeline for the final report

The AAIB said the investigation remains independent, objective and evidence-based, and that the final report will only be published after all international investigations and reviews required under ICAO procedures have been completed.

The office also said the purpose of the investigation is to improve aviation safety through lessons learned and safety recommendations, not to assign blame or responsibility. She asked the media and the public to avoid speculation or premature conclusions until the final results are published.
