US diplomat found dead in Myanmar hotel and Thai woman detained: 'Out of respect...'

An American official was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Myanmar hotel, and a Thai woman was arrested by local police in connection with the investigation. Although the incident occurred a few weeks ago, the Foreign Ministry has now confirmed the death and said it will not reveal any further details about the case.

“Out of respect for the privacy of family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the State Department said in an email response to questions from The Associated Press.According to three people in Myanmar’s diplomatic community, who said they were not authorized to discuss the case, the man was found dead about two weeks ago at the Sakura Inn and Inn.The long-term rental hotel is popular with diplomats, business people and other international visitors, and is located about 1.5 kilometers (1 mi) from the US Embassy. The Thai Embassy in Yangon and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs also refused to say whether they had provided consular support to the suspect or provide any other information. The manager of the Sakura Hotel also refused to comment when contacted by the agency.
