Veteran director Bharathiraja, one of the most influential directors in the history of Tamil cinema, has died at the age of 84. The popular director reportedly breathed his last at his residence in Chennai in the early hours of Wednesday following age-related health complications. The Indian Express reports that his health condition has deteriorated in recent months, especially after the sudden death of his son Manoj in 2025.
The director who changed Tamil cinema
Bharathiraja is widely credited with bringing realism and rural life to mainstream Tamil cinema. At a time when studio-based productions dominated the industry, he chose to tell stories rooted in villages and everyday life.His breakthrough came with the classic film “16 Vayathinile” in 1977.
The film is considered a landmark in Tamil cinema and paved the way for a new style of storytelling.His filmography includes memorable works like Muthal Mariyathai and many other acclaimed productions. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including six National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.
Khushboo Sundar Pays emotional tribute
Among the celebrities who mourned his death were actress and politician Khushboo Sundar. She shared an emotional note recalling her association with the director.
“I am devastated to know that our beloved, loved and respected director, the legendary #BharathiRaaja avl, is no longer with us. His death has been a dark cloud in Tamil cinema. His films were benchmarks and will remain the de facto school of filmmaking. He left behind a huge legacy for all cinema lovers. He always said let us make a film with me in two banks. That will remain an unfulfilled dream,” Khushboo wrote on social media.

Director Arun Matheswaran also shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Bharathiraja as more than just a film director.
He wrote: “We have lost more than just a filmmaker. We have lost a man who lived and breathed cinema. He not only made films, but redefined Tamil cinema, time and time again. A true brave, fearless, endlessly curious, and one of the greatest to ever hold a camera. I will forever hold the privilege of directing him in my first film.”
