3rd ODI: Rain plays spoilsport as Sri Lanka win series 1-0 to end 13-year Caribbean drought

Sri Lanka got the ODI series against the West Indies after the third and final match was called off due to rain, just like the second match. Persistent wet conditions led to the umpires calling off the match without a ball being bowled, giving Sri Lanka a series win by 1-0.The visitors had already taken control of the series by winning the opening ODI by 41 runs, their first one-day international win in the Caribbean in 13 years. With the next two games to go, that result was enough to decide the series.

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis was happy with the team’s performance, especially in the only completed match of the series. He felt the team had performed well across the board and was encouraged by the result ahead of next year’s World Cup.“We are very happy to win the series,” Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis said. “We did really well in that one game in all three divisions. There’s not a lot of games to go before next year’s World Cup and I’m happy with my first win in the series as captain.”The victory was also the first series win for Sri Lanka under new coach Gary Kirsten, a former South African star.

Rain frustrates West Indies

West Indies captain Shai Hope admitted that the weather played a major role in the result but praised Sri Lanka for making the most of their opportunities in the opener.

“You can’t control Mother Nature,” West Indies captain Shai Hope said. “We must give credit to the Sri Lankan team for the way they played in the first match.”Although the ODI series ended in a disappointing manner, both teams will now shift their focus to the T20I phase of the tour. The first of three Twenty20 international matches is scheduled to be played in Kingston on Thursday.
