It begins, as many Jeffrey Epstein stories do, in a room where power recognizes power. In this case, the room is said to have been at the Plaza Hotel in New York in the early 1990s. A young woman from Texas, Melanie Starnes, who later became Dr. Melanie Walker, told people she was introduced to Epstein by Donald Trump.
Three decades later, her name is now at the center of another uncomfortable triangle involving Epstein, Bill Gates and the elite networks that allowed a convicted sex offender to continue moving through the world’s most powerful circles.Walker is the hidden figure in the final chapter of the Epstein files. A Seattle doctor, a former Gates Foundation employee and then a consultant in Gates’ private office, she had long-standing ties to Epstein and became closely associated with Gates’ world.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Walker worked for more than a decade at the Gates Foundation and Gates’ private office. By the summer of 2017, her relationship with Gates had turned sexual, according to people familiar with the matter.
A Gates spokesman said the relationship was consensual and ended amicably. The story is important because Walker appears to have been a beneficiary of Epstein’s patronage and one of the people who helped him gain access to Gates’ circle after his 2008 conviction on charges of soliciting a minor for prostitution.
Her lawyer described her as a “survivor of Jeffrey Epstein” who suffered a “coercive relationship” with him over decades. This makes her role complex, but also revealing. Epstein’s world was built on precisely such complexities: personal dependency, elite access, reputation laundering, and the quiet movement of people between philanthropy, finance, academia, royalty, and politics.
Who is Melanie Walker?
Melanie Walker, now 54, is a physician and professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.
She grew up in Laredo, Texas, as the daughter of an Air Force veteran. She graduated with honors from the University of Texas and, according to a Wall Street Journal report, later told people that she met Epstein and Trump at the Plaza Hotel in the early 1990s. In a 2018 email cited in the report, she wrote that she had known Epstein for 28 years and that Trump had introduced them.

Initially, Epstein and Walker reportedly discussed the possibility of modeling for Victoria’s Secret.
He later advises her to forget about modeling and pursue medical school instead. Walker did so, and Epstein stayed in her life. Records cited in the report show they listed an address at a building in New York where Epstein controlled multiple units used to house associates and victims. Epstein also made her his “scientific advisor.”
“Walker also developed a relationship with Prince Andrew after an introduction by Ghislaine Maxwell, a long-time associate of Epstein’s.
By the early 2000s, she was living in Seattle with Steven Sinofsky, then a top executive at Microsoft. In 2006, she joined the Gates Foundation.
How did you connect Epstein to the world of Gates?
Perhaps Walker’s most important role, according to the report, was his role as someone who secured Epstein within Gates’ orbit. At the Gates Foundation, she became friends with Boris Nikolic, the Harvard-trained immunologist who served as Gates’ chief scientific advisor.
In 2009, after Nikolic moved into Gates’ private office, Walker reportedly took him to lunch and talked about Epstein. Nikolic told the Wall Street Journal that he had never heard of Epstein before that conversation. Walker praised Epstein as the man who helped put her on the path to medicine and reduced his 2008 conviction.
Nikolic met Epstein later that year.In an October 2009 email to Epstein, Walker also told him that Nikolic was moving to work with Gates full-time, which he described as classified information.
Years later, Epstein helped Nikolic negotiate his exit from Gates’ private office. Nikolic later said he deeply regretted his dealings with Epstein and called him a “master manipulator.”Walker also appears to vouch for Epstein for others in the Gates Foundation community. In 2010, she emailed Alex Friedman, the former chief financial officer of the Gates Foundation, praising Epstein and joking that she could attest to “20 full years of bad behavior” on his part.
Friedman told the Wall Street Journal that he had never heard of Epstein before Walker mentioned him and viewed the comment as a sarcastic reference to someone she had known for a long time.
Why did Epstein want Gates?
For Epstein, Gates was a prize that went far beyond money. Gates represented the respectability, scientific seriousness, philanthropic strength and reach of the global health enterprise. After Epstein’s conviction in 2008, the association with Gates could help him regain the legitimacy he lost.In January 2011, before Epstein met Gates, Walker reportedly emailed Gates to set him up. She described Epstein as one of her closest friends, discussed his views on global poverty and credited him with her decision to attend medical school. Gates said he met with Epstein several times from 2011 to 2014, including at Epstein’s home in New York, to discuss philanthropy.Epstein tried unsuccessfully to convince Gates to set up a global donor fund with JP Morgan.
The project did not materialize. But the connection itself was important. For someone like Epstein, proximity to Gates was a form of reputational oxygen.
Did Walker warn Gates about Epstein?
Yes. In one of the most surprising parts of the report, Walker appears to have played both roles: presenter and warning. In August 2014, she reportedly sent Gates a warning about Epstein. She advised Gates to maintain a “healthy distance” from Epstein on anything personal.
She also wrote that Epstein tried to appeal to the “weaknesses or tendencies” of powerful people. This warning is important because it suggests that Walker understood something about Epstein’s methods. It also highlights the central ambiguity of her role. She was close to Epstein, credited him with shaping her career and helped connect him to the world of Gates. However, she also warned Gates of the risks of getting involved with him personally.
What is the role of Melinda French Gates?
The report says Epstein struggled to win over Melinda French Gates. After one evening at Epstein’s Manhattan home, she said she never wanted to see him again. Walker’s relationship with French Gates also appears to have soured. In letters to Epstein, Walker complained that Melinda was acting against her through establishment channels.A French Jets spokeswoman declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal.
What happened between Walker and Gates?
According to the report, Walker left the Gates Foundation and later joined Gates’ private office. By the summer of 2017, her relationship with Gates had become sexual, according to people familiar with the matter.A Gates spokesman said the relationship was consensual and ended amicably. The spokesperson also said that Gates has never been in an inappropriate relationship with any employee of the Gates Foundation or Gates Ventures, and no complaint alleging otherwise has ever been filed.
The spokesperson also said Gates never engaged in any coercive, predatory or non-consensual sexual behavior.Meanwhile, Walker continued to trust Epstein. In 2017, she exchanged messages with him about Gates and about negotiations about her exit from Gates’ private office. In one conversation, Epstein advised her on how to word a letter to Gates so he wouldn’t forward it. In another letter, Walker noted the existence of “blue dress” emails and other embarrassing material, though she expressed reluctance to take action. It’s impossible to miss the “Blue Dress” sign. It brings up the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, though The report does not draw any direct parallel beyond Walker’s wording.
What does Gates say now?
Gates’ spokesman said he was not aware of the nature of Walker’s relationship with Epstein, their shared motives, or the details of their history. The spokesman also said the correspondence showed that Epstein was actively encouraging Walker to pursue a sexual relationship with Gates.Gates has publicly expressed remorse for his dealings with Epstein, calling them a mistake and saying they did not involve illegal conduct. His spokesman told the Wall Street Journal that Gates had no contact with Epstein and did not want any contact with him after 2014.However, the report says Walker told Epstein in 2019 that she met Gates, discussed science and ate cheeseburgers with him. She also told Epstein that she said Gates owed him a call.
Gates never asked Walker to pass information to Epstein, the spokesman said.
Why did this story appear now?
The Wall Street Journal report says Gates is expected to face questions before Congress about the exchanges resulting from the Justice Department’s release of the Epstein files. The Gates Foundation has also launched its own investigation into its ties to Epstein, which is being led by the law firm WilmerHale. Investigators reportedly asked about Walker and the nature of her relationship with Gates.Walker’s name has remained relatively low-key compared to Epstein’s other associates. Her lawyer had asked the Ministry of Justice to delete her name from her files. She has not filed claims against Epstein’s estate nor has she alleged sexual assault. Her lawyer said she preferred not to comment further.
The big picture
The Epstein scandal was always about more than crimes committed by one man. It’s also about the architecture that protected him: the introductions, endorsements, invitations, and periods of silence that helped him remain useful to powerful people even after his conviction.Melanie Walker’s story lies within that architecture. She was allegedly introduced to Epstein by Trump, supervised by Epstein, had contact with Prince Andrew, became immersed in Gates’ philanthropic world and later became close to Gates himself. Her lawyer says she was trapped in a coercive relationship with Epstein. The Wall Street Journal report also shows that she helped Epstein get into important rooms. This duality is what makes the story so disturbing. In Epstein’s world, people can be victims, facilitators, confidants, and gatekeepers all at once. Walker’s story does not resolve this contradiction. displays that.
