Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of AIR, Laldahoma said the public radio had been one of the most important and trusted voices in the country since its inception.
He said AIR’s broadcast reaches not only different parts of India but also neighboring countries, helping to strengthen ties between Zo communities spread across regions.
The Prime Minister also praised the cultural impact of the broadcaster, describing AIR as an excellent model of the proper use of the Mizo language.
He said the network thus contributes significantly to the preservation of the language while protecting vital events and records from Mizo history.
As the country’s largest radio network and one of the largest globally, AIR broadcasts in 23 languages and more than 146 dialects, according to officials.
They said it has the largest number of multilingual broadcasts in the world, and its signals reach more than 100 countries.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the important role played by AIR in India’s struggle for independence and its constant promotion of national unity.
He said that AIR Aizawl station, which was established on July 31, 1966, served as a crucial lifeline for news and information during periods of unrest or separatist movement in the state.
He said that during the curfew when communities could not gather, the radio was bringing people together spiritually by broadcasting religious hymns and songs.
“AIR remains an important custodian of cultural heritage. Obtaining AIR Artist status remains a highly respected distinction among renowned Mizo singers,” Laldouma said.
AIR Director and Chairman Mizoram Group, Dr. Lalrupuya, who spoke on the occasion, highlighted AIR’s enduring importance and public respect despite rapid technological advancement.
He said that AIR has succeeded in introducing a dynamic set of new digital initiatives and programs to keep pace with modern developments.
