A six-year-old girl died after an old brick pillar collapsed on her while she was playing on a makeshift swing in north Delhi’s Holamby Khurd area, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place at Vihar Metro in Narela Industrial Area on Saturday, they said, adding that no crime emerged during the preliminary investigation and the incident appeared to be accidental in nature.

A senior police officer said that after receiving information about a girl falling into a drain on Saturday, “a police team immediately rushed to the scene and found the minor unconscious on the roof of a covered safety tank.”
The girl, a resident of Metro Vihar, Holambi Khurd, was rushed to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, the officer said.
Her body was later sent to the mortuary of Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital in Jehangirpuri for preservation and further legal proceedings.

During the investigation, police found that the girl was playing on a rope swing tied to an old brick pole. The other end of the rope was tied to a metal mesh fixed to a nearby wall.
He added, “Initial investigations revealed that the brick pillar was in a dilapidated condition. While the girl was using the swing, the weak structure suddenly collapsed and collapsed, injuring her and causing fatal injuries.”
Police said the pole appeared old and unstable and may not have been able to withstand the pressure of swaying. Local residents gathered at the scene after the accident, while police searched the area and recorded the testimonies of residents and eyewitnesses.

Police are examining all aspects as part of the investigation. Police added that further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the collapse.
