The controversy surrounding Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s film ‘Peddi’ has raised voices from across the film industry. Ashika Ranganath, who has worked in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films, has now come out in support of Janhvi Kapoor, urging fans to direct their criticism at the filmmaking system rather than the actress.
Let’s take a look at what she has to say.
Ashika Ranganath defends Janhvi Kapoor and calls in order
Ashika Ranganath took to her Instagram Stories to address the backlash directed at Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal of the character Achiyyamma in the film Peddi. In her post, she highlights how female characters in commercial films are routinely written to serve the appeal of the male hero rather than stand out as fully realized individuals. The caption read: “Don’t blame the actress. Blame the system and the makers who still think this is what sells.”
Actors often work within the opportunities available to them, hoping to be part of bigger films and reach wider audiences. If female characters feel supported, then the responsibility lies more with the writing and filmmaking choices than with the women playing those roles.
More on the “Peddi” controversy.
Peddi is facing criticism for its portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma, with many viewers pointing out the over-sexualisation of her role and the use of close-ups of her body even as the hero describes the beauty of her face.
Not only this, a romantic subplot in the film has sparked controversy on social media. In one scene, Ram Charan’s character, Bedi, kisses Achiyama during a blackout without her consent, despite her previous disinterest. Netizens described the act as assault and questioned why it was presented in a romantic light, while a similar act by another character in the film was clearly presented as vile behaviour.
