'Challenges ahead': Suryakumar Yadav breaks silence after India snub as Shreyas Iyer named T20I captain

Suryakumar Yadav wished the Indian team well after losing the T20I captaincy, as he shared a message of support on Instagram after India’s squads for the Ireland and England tours were announced.The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Soon after the announcement, Suryakumar posted an Instagram story in support of the team.

“I wish this highly skilled group every success in the challenges ahead.” Suriya posted on his Instagram story.The team announcement also marks a significant moment in Indian cricket as 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi earned his first India call-up.

At the age of 15 years and 71 days, he became the youngest player ever selected for an Indian cricket team, surpassing the record held by Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on 15 November 1989.India will first tour Ireland for two T20Is on June 26 and 28 before playing a five-match T20I series against England from July 1-11.Shreyas returned to the Indian T20I team for the first time since the match against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023.

“We have more time for the next World Cup, his (Shreyas) performance as a captain after winning (the Indian Premier League) with KKR and having two good seasons with PBKS. He was very close to being in the team always but couldn’t find the place,” chief selector said.

He told reporters after announcing the teams.Agarkar said Suryakumar’s form over the past two seasons influenced the decision to make a change in leadership. As a result, Suryakumar lost the T20I captaincy and his place in the team.
