India’s T20 cricket team has entered a new phase, with Shreyas Iyer named as captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, while teenage prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi gets a historic call-up for the first time. At just 15 years and 71 days, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player ever selected for an Indian team, breaking a record that had stood since Sachin Tendulkar’s debut in 1989. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi.
India’s T20 campaign begins with two matches in Ireland on June 26-28 before the team heads to England for a five-match series from July 1-11. The team announcement also marks Shreyas’ return to India’s T20 setup for the first time since the series against Australia in December 2023. His elevation to captaincy comes after several successful years as captain in franchise cricket and consistent performances with the bat. Explaining the decision, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said: “As far as Shreyas is concerned, we have seen what he has done over the last few years, leading different franchises.
“He’s won the final once, and from there it’s been a tougher season this year after a great start. We’ve seen everything a leader can (handle). He’s done really well.” “He was very close to being in the World Cup (T20) squad as well. With Suriya still there, there was no place for him, so in my opinion he is a standout candidate with enough experience having now led the T20 format; this is obviously a different challenge.” Iyer’s leadership credentials have been bolstered by guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and taking Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Coupled with his strong batting returns over the past two seasons, those performances have convinced the selectors that he is the right man to lead India’s upcoming T20 tournament. But the decision comes at a cost
Suryakumar Yadav
. Despite leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar not only lost the captaincy but also lost his place in the team. Speaking about the move, Agarkar said: “As far as Syria is concerned, it is obviously difficult having just won the T20 World Cup. But as happens after most World Cups, we are trying to re-evaluate the best way forward. “(It was due to) partly his form but also looking at the cycle of the next two years, or just over two years until the next World Cup, we thought this was the best way forward and as I said, Shreyas is a very worthy leader. “We have discussed this a lot, especially when someone leads you to a World Cup win. It’s not the easiest kind of discussion, but I don’t think necessarily…at some point, we would have looked at it. Now, whether the format of the IPL dictates that; I’m not sure that’s the case. There have always been talks about that.” With a new captain and the youngest player in Indian cricket history joining the team, the selectors have signaled a clear shift in direction as they begin preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup tournament.
