At least three people died after a gantry crane used to build a flyover on the Jewar Expressway linking Faridabad collapsed on a temporary shelter at a construction site in Faridabad, Haryana on Thursday, police said.

One worker was rescued with serious injuries, while rescue teams continued their efforts to reach others who were believed to be trapped under heavy equipment.

Faridabad Police Public Relations Officer Yashpal Yadav said the incident occurred near Panhera Khurd village under the jurisdiction of Chinsa police station between 1.30 pm and 2 pm.

He added: “The police received information about the accident at around three in the afternoon, after which rescue workers equipped with cutting equipment went to the scene.”

Yadav said rescue workers were able to recover an injured worker whose legs were shattered.

He added, “Efforts are still ongoing to cut or lift the collapsed part of the crane and the container to reach other workers. The collapsed equipment weighs several tons.”

Officers said several shipping containers were located at the site and were being used as temporary site offices or resting places by officials, contractors and workers.
