Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai conveyed his message to the BJP high command regarding his resignation and why he is planning to exit the party during a meeting with BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh in Delhi on Tuesday, sources said.

Earlier in the day, Annamalai had detailed discussions on the current political scenario in Tamil Nadu with the three leaders and conveyed the reasons why the party would not win there and what was needed to strengthen the party in the state.

Sources added that Annamalai is clear about his thoughts and the party has assured him that he will return soon after discussing the issue, most likely tonight or tomorrow morning.

After this, Annamalai may update the media on his current thoughts and next step, whether he will form a new party or stay with the BJP, sources told ANI.

A day earlier, in response to a question about various rumors circulating on social media claiming that he was planning to leave the party and start a new political party, he said: “Please wait. We will sit and talk in a couple of days.”

His statements came amid intense discussion on social media about his next political move. Posters with slogans like “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us” were put up along the main roads and streets of Coimbatore ahead of Annamalai’s birthday on June 4.

The major political shift comes after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which marked a historic shift in state politics as TVK won 108 seats in its first election, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK formations.

After the victory, Vijay took charge at the Tamil Nadu State Secretariat in Chennai soon after taking oath as the 13th Chief Minister of the state.
