A head constable of Manipur Police was stabbed to death during an anti-narcotics operation at Muying Meena Bazaar in Thongkong area of ​​Thoubal district while trying to arrest a suspect involved in drug-related activities, police said on Thursday.

The accident occurred around eight o’clock on Wednesday evening. The deceased has been identified as Head Constable Khairum Suresh of Thoubal District Commando Unit.

During an operation, a team of commandos from Thoubal District arrested the suspect, Mohammed Naobi alias Naocha (25), a resident of Mwijing Lingogen in Thoubal District, who was reportedly involved in a drug-related case. Based on what Al-Nawbi revealed, the police team accompanied him to a place where he allegedly hid the drugs.

A confrontation broke out between the suspect and police officers during the operation, when Naobi stabbed the police chief several times before fleeing the scene.

The injured officer was taken to Thoubal District Hospital where he later died during treatment, police said.

Later, a police team arrested Naobi along with 30-year-old Salman Khan from Mujing Maibam Likai in Thoubal district in connection with the incident.

Police said an investigation is underway to identify and arrest others involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, in the last 48 hours, security forces arrested five militants of various banned underground outfits from two locations, including near Indo-Myanmar border pillar No. 67 near Khangtong village under Moulsham police station in Chandel district.

Police said four active cadres from three different banned underground groups – a cadre each from the Kanglei Pak Communist Party (KCP) and the Kanglei Yaul Kana Lup (KYKL), and two cadres from the People’s Revolutionary Party Kangleipak ​​(PREPAK) – were also arrested on Tuesday from the general area of ​​Khuntong village.

Additionally, in a separate incident, security forces arrested another active cadre of the banned underground group PREPAK from Sawombung Khunjao near the Primary Health Center of Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East District.
