Sam Levinson stands by his decision to have Rue (Zendaya) die Sunday night trance Season 3 finale.
In a post-show segment on HBO, Levinson, the series’ creator, says it felt like the right way to wrap up her character. “It felt like an honest ending,” Levinson said. “The honest bottom line is that people like Rue don’t succeed.”
He continued, “I think in the end I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction.” “I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil it can cause.”
The finale shows Rue dying from an accidental overdose from taking Alamo’s Percocet pills that were laced with fentanyl. During a dream sequence while she overdoses, she has an emotional moment with Fezco which contains unseen footage with Angus Cloud, who died in 2023 at the age of 25 due to an accidental overdose. Additionally, Hunter Schaeffer, who played Rue’s on-again, off-again love interest Jules, called Zendaya her “soul mate” and said she was very lucky to have him as her first scene partner on the series.
