Lucknow police have registered a case against the victim’s husband, who is also a social media influencer with nearly 7.5 lakh followers on Instagram, along with other family members.

According to a police statement, the woman was married to a resident Saadatganj area of ​​Lucknow on December 9, 2025. Her family alleged that after marriage, she was repeatedly harassed by her husband and other relatives for demanding additional dowry, including a car.

According to the family, they gave $7 lakhs in cash and various household items as “gifts” during the marriage.

Tell the family about the alleged torture

The victim’s family claimed that their daughter told them about the alleged torture meted out to her in-laws, and they even traveled to their matrimonial home in Lucknow several times to mediate between them.

The victim’s uncle filed a complaint with the police, alleging that his niece was killed by her in-laws because dowry demands were not met.

“The complaint alleges that after marriage, the deceased was subjected to constant harassment by her husband and other members of her in-laws’ family due to them demanding more dowry and a car. The complainant also alleged that due to non-fulfillment of dowry demands, her in-laws killed the deceased by hanging her on May 30, 2026,” the police said in a statement.

The accused include the victim’s father-in-law, his brother-in-law, his wife’s sisters, and his aunt.

Investigation

The police said that they searched the scene of the accident and sent the body for autopsy after completing investigation procedures. The panchnama was conducted in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Jitendra Kumar Dubey.

“Based on the complaint, Saadatganj police registered an FIR under Sections 80(2) and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act,” ADCP Dubey said.

Officials said that police teams have been formed to arrest the accused, and raids are still underway.

“Further legal action will be taken on the basis of available evidence and the autopsy report,” the ADCP added.

The new case has some similarities with the Twisha Sharma incident that came to light in Bhopal. Sharma, a resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. After her death on May 12, her family alleged that she was harassed over dowry by her husband and his in-laws.

The case involves serious allegations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
