The show’s end isn’t necessarily a surprise, as Zendaya has said in interviews that she believes this season to be her last. There was also a four-year gap between seasons two and three and rumors of conflict behind the scenes.
When asked about the years-long delay, Francesca Orci, executive vice president of HBO programming and president of HBO drama series and movies, recently said: THR: “It was important that everyone felt like Season 3 was moving the story forward in a meaningful and ambitious way. And when Sam started sharing how expansive the world of the show was this season, there was real excitement about returning.”
Levinson warned fans of the show that they should not wait to watch the final episodes as they will be shown within the next ten days. “If you don’t watch Episodes Seven and Eight live – the moment they come out – you will be spoiled,” he said, without offering further teasers. “There are some big things happening.”
Earlier this month, Levinson told an audience at American Cinematheque that he thinks Season 3 “is our best season,” explaining that “there are some big things happening” in the episodes leading up to the finale.
He clearly wasn’t kidding: Last week’s episode (spoiler alert!) saw the death of Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. This week’s finale saw the deaths of two people: Lori Martha Kelly, who committed suicide, and Zendaya Rowe, whose drugs were laced with fentanyl.
