Chennai, AIADMK MP M Dhanapal on Thursday sought a CBI probe into the resignation of four newly-elected MLAs from his party who joined the ruling TVK immediately after they resigned from their post as legislators this week.
He also claimed that a huge amount of money was exchanged behind the resignation of four AIADMK MLAs.
His appeal comes a day after AIADMK factions agreed with the SP Velumani-led rebel camp to accept the leadership of party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and act as a “united and strong force”.
The rebel MLAs visited Palaniswami at his residence on Greenways Road here on May 27 and expressed their support to the AIADMK general secretary once again.
“The background behind the resignation of the four MLAs immediately after taking oath should be investigated,” the Rajya Sabha MP said on ‘X’ programme. He claimed that their joining the ruling party came when TVK was lacking majority on its own in the Assembly and could not destroy the AIADMK.
“There is information that huge sums of money were exchanged. The Center must order an investigation into the CBI to protect democracy. The Enforcement Directorate must devote its attention to this incident,” Dhanapal added.
Four AIADMK legislators, K Maragatham Kumaravel, S Jayakumar, P Sathyabama and Esakki Subaya, resigned from their posts as MLAs and joined TVK, sparking a heated debate among political parties in the state.
The CPI and VCK criticized this development as “not a healthy policy”.
Communist Party of India State Minister P Shanmugam said the members were already in a position where they may face legal action under the anti-defection law for voting for the TVK government in the Assembly during the floor test on May 13. He said that immediately bringing them into the party would be seen as encouragement for their actions.
