'Tremendous achievement': Sachin Tendulkar reacts as Gurinderveer Singh writes history with record run

New Delhi: Indian athletics witnessed a historic moment on Saturday as Gurinderveer Singh became the fastest Indian ever in the men’s 100 metres, sparking an enthusiastic response from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on social media.Gurinderveer clocked a sensational time of 10.09 seconds during the National Senior Federation competition, breaking the national record and becoming the first Indian runner to go under 10.10 seconds.

Tendulkar took to the X to praise the Punjab runner’s remarkable achievement.“I am extremely proud of Gurinderveer Singh for becoming the fastest Indian ever. What a tremendous achievement. Keep running forward, champion!” Sachin posted while sharing photos of the race.

The record was broken twice in the dramatic encounterThe men’s 100m battle between Gurinderveer and Animesh Kujur turned into one of the most memorable speed contests in the history of Indian athletics.Animesh entered the competition as the national record holder after clocking 10.18 seconds last year and was widely considered the favourite.But the drama began on Friday itself when 25-year-old Gorenderfer clocked 10.17 seconds in the semi-finals to break the national record.

Surprisingly, after just five minutes, Animesh responded by clocking 10.15 seconds in another semi-final heat to immediately retake the record.The national record was broken twice within minutes.However, Gorenderfer saved his best for Saturday’s final. The Punjabi athlete claimed victory in 10.09 seconds, finishing comfortably ahead of Animesh, firmly etching his name in the history of Indian athletics.Second fastest time in Asia this seasonGorenderfer’s time is now the second fastest in Asia this season, behind Japanese teenager Fukuto Komuro, who clocked 10.08 seconds earlier this year.The Indian athlete also comfortably breached the Athletics Federation of India’s qualifying mark of 10.16 seconds for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.Meanwhile, Pranav Gaurav finished third in the final with a time of 10.29 seconds.
