Salman Khan’s much-awaited war film ‘Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace’ remains in limbo, and he is not alone. Now, films about the 2020 India-China Galwan Valley conflict face serious barriers, as government directives and diplomatic sensitivities make it increasingly difficult to bring these stories to the screen.
While ‘Maatrubhumi’ is struggling to find a release date, another project on the exact same subject has been put on hold.Another project has reportedly been postponed amid speculation over a Salman Khan filmAccording to a report by Mid-day, producer Himalai Dassani, husband of actress Bhagyashree, has been developing The Lion of Galwan along with his son, actor Abhimanyu Dassani. The film was to be based on the life of Vir Chakra award-winning Sepoy Gurtej Singh, who was martyred during the Galwan Valley clash.
Now the project has been postponed indefinitely.Himalai Dassani has explained the dilemma filmmakers find themselves in when they try to tell Galwan’s story. He said, “The relationship between India and China is much better today. So, we will have to reconsider the story idea. After we finish the script, we will have to submit it to the Indian Ministry of Defense before we start shooting. We have also received a directive from them that we cannot bashing China.”
So, we have to reconsider that angle.
“He went further, explaining the creative deadlock this creates, saying, “If we don’t get clearance from the Ministry of Defence, there won’t be any sense in telling the story of the Battle of Galwan because we can’t show the right angle. If the fighting and the reasons behind the clash don’t exist, then what’s the point of making a film about it? So, we kept it on the back burner.”Where does Matrophumi stand now?Originally titled “Battle of Galwan” and officially retitled on March 16, “Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace” was targeted for an April 17 release before being postponed.
