Maika Monroe is frighteningly bloodthirsty in a newly released trailer for her latest horror work, Victorian psyche.

The movie — from my producer Long legsthe feature that cemented Monroe’s status as a scream queen — makes its world premiere Thursday at Un Certain Regard at Cannes, after The Hollywood Reporter revealed an exclusive first look as the festival kicked off earlier this month.

Zachary Wiggon’s period film stars Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Amy de Brun, Ruth Wilson, Jacoby Job and Evie Templeton, and will be released in the fall via Bleecker Street (US) and True Brit (UK). It is an adaptation of Virginia Veto’s 2025 novel of the same name.

The teaser shows Monroe playing an eccentric young governess in 1858, who arrives at the remote Gothic mansion, Ensor House. While accommodating her, employees begin to disappear inexplicably, and the owners wonder if there is something wrong with (or possessing) the young woman.

In the first interview, Monroe revealed her killer, Nanny Winifred THRDavid Canfield: “It terrified me. I knew it would be the hardest role I’d ever done – and incredibly different from anything I’d ever done.”

She continued: “There’s always a little piece of me in the roles I play, something I can draw on or relate to in my personal life – but this role was actually a departure from that. It was working from the ground up, creating this character where I couldn’t rely on myself. It really, magically, affected me. I felt that every day.”

Director Wigeon added that he found it fascinating to see an outsider who “desperately wants to be an insider, which is simply impossible.”

“It’s a very profound paradox,” he said. “She will never belong — and she will never stop wanting to belong.” THR About Winifred.

Watch the teaser for Victorian psyche less.
