A mob dragged a man from his home in Odisha’s Cuttack district, lynched him on suspicion of black magic and then burned his body to erase evidence, after which 25 people were arrested, police said on Wednesday.

While the incident occurred on May 10, the arrest was made on Tuesday, a day after the victim’s father filed a formal complaint with the police.

Sweta Behera claimed in the complaint that his son, Tikima Behera, was dragged out of the house in Talamunduli village and beaten by the mob on May 10, leading to his death. The father claimed that his body was burned to erase the evidence.

He stated that Tikima Lake was staying with his brother and brother-in-law in the village after his wife abandoned him seven years ago.

“So far, we have arrested 25 men from the village who allegedly killed the man on suspicion of black magic. Three teams have been formed to investigate the incident. One of the arrested accused confessed to the crime during interrogation,” Cuttack (rural) SP Vineet Agrawal told reporters.

He added that the police also found the partially burned body and bones of the deceased.
