NEET UG 2026 under investigation: NTA flags alleged malpractice, says central agencies vetting entries

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Sunday publicly acknowledged reports of alleged irregularities linked to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2026 and confirmed that inputs regarding suspected malpractices have already been escalated to central agencies for investigation. This development comes on the heels of action initiated by Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group (SOG), which has led to a fresh audit into the integrity of one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance exams. In an official statement issued on

NTA details multi-layered security measures

Amid growing anxiety among medical aspirants and parents, the exam agency has outlined the comprehensive security architecture deployed during the screening process.According to NTA, the question papers were transported in GPS tracking vehicles bearing unique watermark identifiers designed to ensure traceability. The examination centers were monitored through AI-assisted CCTV monitoring linked to a central control room.

The agency also stated that biometric verification was mandatory for every candidate and 5G jammers were operational at the centers to prevent digital malpractices and unauthorized communications. The statement appears intended to bolster the agency’s claim that strong safeguards were implemented during the inspection.

Entries regarding the suspected malpractice were shared on May 8

The NTA revealed that it received inputs on the alleged malpractice activity on May 7, four days after the examination was conducted.“These inputs were escalated by the NTA to the central agencies on the morning of May 8, 2026 for independent verification and necessary action,” the agency told ANI.While the NTA has not revealed the exact nature of the alleged irregularities, the confirmation that central agencies are now involved has intensified interest around the vetting process. The intervention of the Special Operations Group in Rajasthan has further amplified concerns, especially in light of the history of controversies surrounding high-stakes recruitment and admission exams across the country.

‘NTA will not prejudge the investigation’

In its statement, the agency maintained a cautious stance and said that the investigation is still ongoing. “NTA will not pre-judge the investigation, nor determine its likely outcomes. Whatever the agencies determine – including findings that may require further action – will be transparently examined and disclosed in line with established procedures,” the agency said. The wording reflects the sensitivity surrounding the NEET UG exam, an exam that directly impacts the academic future of thousands of students seeking admission into medical colleges across India.

Any allegation linked to the examination process often raises widespread public concern, given the intense competition and limited number of MBBS seats nationally.

NEET UG is among the most serious exams in India

NEET UG is a single window entrance exam for admissions to MBBS, BDS and allied medical programs across India. With millions of candidates applying annually, the exam remains one of the most stressful academic exams in the country. Any controversy linked to its conduct carries significant implications for students, institutions and the wider credibility of the examination system. As investigative agencies continue their investigations into the alleged irregularities, candidates and their families across the country are expected to closely follow developments in the coming days.
