Two people in their early 30s died when the two-wheeler they were traveling in was hit by a speeding car in Bhajanpura, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, when they were returning home after watching an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, police said. They added that the violating car driver was arrested and detained.

The victims have been identified as Rohit Kashyap, 31, and Hemant Sharma, 33, both friends who live with their families in Karwal Nagar. Police said the accident occurred about 3 to 4 kilometers from their home.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ashish Mishra said, “During the intervening night of May 8 and 9, a car accident was reported to Khajuri Khas Police Station. On reaching the spot near Bhajanpura Metro station, the staff discovered that a Maruti Celerio had rammed into a bullet bike from behind and injured two men. They were rushed to JPC Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.”
Police said that the victims were not wearing helmets, and that the accused, 27 years old, was detained on charges of reckless and negligent driving resulting in death. The Public Prosecution said, “The forensic team collected evidence from the crime scene, the bodies of the deceased were sent for autopsy, the accused involved in the case was arrested, and the violating car was seized.”
The families of the two men said they were shocked by the incident that occurred near their homes. Rohit was working at a travel agency in Netaji Subhash Place. He left behind his parents, wife and their two children aged seven and three.
Shiv Prakash, Rohit’s father, said, “He has left two sons behind. Who will take care of them? The children don’t even know that their father has died. He left home for work and said he would return late at night because he was leaving for an Indian Premier League match. He was very excited to watch the match with his friends. Now, what will we do without him?”
Hemant was working in a logistics company on Bosa Road and left to attend the match from his office.
Ajay Singh, Hemant’s friend, said, “Rohit got the passes from his office and invited me and Hemant. However, at the place, he told us that he had only two passes. So, I left. Rohit and Hemant apologized to me. That was my last conversation with them. Around 1 am, I received a call about their accident. By the time I reached the spot, their bodies had been shifted. Hemant was the breadwinner of the family. It is really shocking for all of us.”
This was the second incident and fourth death in over 12 days, as fans returning from an Indian Premier League match lost their lives in the capital. On April 28, two cousins also died in a similar accident after their motorcycle collided with a goods tanker on Ashoka Road. Police arrested the truck driver about a week after the accident.
