West Bengal CM announcement live: West Bengal Governor R N Ravi dissolved the state legislature on Thursday, May 7. The dissolution of the Assembly comes after the BJP’s landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections and Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign from the post of Chief Minister. In escalating tensions in West Bengal, Chandranath Rath, BJP leader and personal aide to Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by bike-borne attackers in Madhyamgram in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, late on Wednesday. Rath’s body was taken to his hometown in Purba Medinipur district on Thursday. He was hit with gunshots to the head, chest, and abdomen, after which he was taken to the hospital, but he was declared dead.

West Bengal Police have reportedly recovered the bike used by the attackers during the attack on Suvendu Adhikari’s aide. The bike was brought to Madhyamgram police station in North 24 Parganas, ANI reported.

Key points

– The BJP won in West Bengal with a stunning mandate of 207 of the total 294 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed only 80 seats. This is the first time that the BJP has formed a government in West Bengal. The results also made Narendra Modi the first prime minister to win West Bengal after Jawaharlal Nehru.

– In defiance of the Assembly election results, Mamata Banerjee refused to go to Raj Bhavan and tender her resignation, saying she did not lose. According to ECI, Mamata lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur by a margin of over 1,500 votes.

– Union Minister Amit Shah has been appointed as Central Observer for the Chief Ministerial Election in West Bengal. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Sharan Majhi has been appointed as co-observer.
