James Cameron sued by Q’orianka Kilcher
Actress Q’orianka Kilcher, 36, has claimed that her face shape was used as inspiration for the main character in Avatar, Neytiri. Variety reported that the actress officially filed a lawsuit, claiming that this was done without her consent or acknowledgment. “The plaintiff never consented to the defendants’ use of her image, either in an avatar or in any related product or promotion,” a statement from the official filing said.
“Kilcher also named the major studio that was backing the three “Avatar” films. Claims state that her face was used to inspire Neytiri through the use of high-resolution drawings, sculptures, and models. The image that was used to create the animated character comes from Kilcher’s feature in the film “The New World.” She was 14 years old when the film was made.Neytiri is an animated character in the film, originally played by Zoe Saldana through the use of motion sensor costumes and special effects.
Q’orianka Kilcher’s files claim that James Cameron gave her a note admitting that he used her face as inspiration
The file also noted that several aspects of the character, including the cheeks, lips and chin area, were all directly linked to Kilcher. A statement from the actress’s legal team said: “What Cameron did was not inspiration, it was extraction. He took the unique biometric facial features of a 14-year-old Indigenous girl, subjected her to an industrial production process, and generated billions of dollars in profits without even once asking for her permission.”
This is not filmmaking. “This is theft.”Furthermore, in the report, there are more allegations against the director, including the fact that he gave the original actress a note admitting his actions. The note allegedly says: “Your beauty was my early inspiration for Neytiri. Too bad you were shooting for another film. Next time.” This note was delivered to her, along with a copy of the director’s drawing, only shortly after the first film’s release in 2009.Kilcher added in the statement: “I never imagined that someone I trusted would systematically use my face as part of an elaborate design process and incorporate it into the production pipeline without my knowledge or consent. This is a major line crossing. This action is deeply wrong.”At the time of writing, neither James Cameron nor his official legal team have issued any official statements on the matter. Furthermore, the actress is currently seeking damages, as well as public acknowledgment of the fact that her face was used in the film.
