'Ghost Lake' returns: California's largest lost body of water resurfaces after 130 years

Tulare Lake, formerly known as Bashi by the Tachi-Yukut tribe, has made a surprising comeback. This rare event shows how an ancient terminal lake can regain its original basin. It was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River until it was drained in the late 19th century for agricultural purposes.

However, in 2023, severe weather and record snowfall in the Sierra Nevada refilled the basin, covering more than 100,000 acres. This event highlights California’s unpredictable water cycles and points to recent flood control limitations. Besides impacting the Central Valley’s economy, the lake’s return has led to an ecological recovery, attracting many migratory birds and regenerating original cultural areas.

According to the California Department of Water Resources, the Tulare Lake Basin is a terminal basin for the Kings, Kawah, Tule, and White Rivers. Although considered “extinct” due to water diversions and land reclamation for agriculture in the 20th century, the basin remains a natural topographic depression. In 2023, the massive volume of runoff water from the Sierra Nevada exceeded the capacity of man-made canals and dams, allowing the water to follow its natural gravity-driven path back to the “Ghost Lake.”

How 12 Atmospheric rivers Reviving the lost lake

The resurgence was fueled by a “big fill” event caused by a series of more than 12 atmospheric rivers. These storms created a snowpack that was about 300 percent of the normal average in the southern Sierra Nevada, the California Department of Water Resources noted. As this record snowpack melted, the Kings River and Tule River watersheds were inundated, resulting in persistent flooding of the low-lying agricultural polders at the bottom of Tulare Lake.

How the dry dock revitalized its biological cycles

Although a disaster for local infrastructure, the immediately resurfaced lake served as a crucial stop on the Pacific Ocean route. Ornithological observations have recorded tens of thousands of waterfowl, including American waterfowl, black-necked stilts, and various species of ducks, nesting in the newly formed wetlands. This rapid colonization demonstrates the “ecological memory” of the landscape, where dormant seeds and biological cycles are activated upon inundation.

Survival of the Pa’ashi indigenous people

For the Tachi Yokot tribe, the return of the lake is the restoration of the Bashi. Research suggests that the lake was central to the region’s biodiversity and indigenous subsistence for centuries before it was diverted. This resurgence has allowed tribal people to perform traditional ceremonies on the water for the first time in generations, emphasizing that “the lake never died,” but was only suppressed through industrial engineering.
