West Bengal CM Announcement Live Updates: The swearing-in ceremony for the post of Chief Minister of West Bengal will be held on May 9, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya confirmed on Tuesday. After a record win in West Bengal, the looming question over the BJP leadership is who the party will choose as its chief ministerial candidate in the state. Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her Bhabanipur constituency on Monday, has emerged as the first candidate.

This is not the first time Adhikari has defeated Banerjee. In 2021, he swept the Nandigram seat from it by 1,956 votes. According to a senior BJP functionary, the party could “reward” him for this by offering him the top job. On April 2, when Adhikari filed his nomination papers from Bhabanipur seat in Kolkata, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accompanied him, suggesting that the party’s top brass were behind him.
Another senior BJP leader pointed out that unlike the Lok Sabha polls, the party has never fielded any candidate for two Assembly seats in recent history. “For Adhikari, this was a test of his charisma and ability as an opposition leader,” said the leader, who also requested that his name not be published.
However, BJP leaders said the party has not ruled out the names of state unit president Samik Bhattacharya and vice president Agnimitra Paul as other potential faces of the chief ministership. Paul could become an ideal candidate for the top job if the party decides to support a woman prime minister. Paul was a Member of Parliament for the Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024. The functionaries noted that Samik Bhattacharya can be credited with that under his leadership the party won the first parliamentary elections in Bengal. Bhattacharya is currently a member of Rajya Sabha.

West Bengal CM Announcement Live Updates: Unemployed teachers cautiously optimistic after Assembly poll results
After the BJP’s landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, a section of unemployed faculty members, whose jobs were canceled under the Supreme Court order in 2025, said on Tuesday that they are now looking forward to some appropriate steps by the new government to bring back their jobs.
They said they voted keeping in mind the “uncertain future” they face, and expressed hope that the new administration would meet their long-awaited demand for transparent and timely appointments.
In April 2025, the Supreme Court ordered cancellation of the appointments of over 25 lakh teaching and non-teaching staff recruited through the West Bengal School Service Commission, citing widespread irregularities and manipulation in the recruitment process in 2016 when the TMC was in power.
“Due to unimaginable corruption and nepotism by the previous government, most of the unemployed teachers are staring at an uncertain future,” Mrinmoy Mondal, one of the unemployed teachers, told PTI.
“We are now looking forward to some appropriate steps by the new government to legally bring back the deserving teachers,” said Mondal, who is also the spokesperson of the West Bengal Untainted Teachers Association.
“Untainted,” “deserving,” or “qualified” teaching or non-teaching staff are those whose involvement in the wrongdoing in the case has not been proven.
