DMK leader KR Periakaruppan loses his Assembly seat to TVK by one vote

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Minister of State for Cooperatives KR Periakaruppan lost the Tiruppattur Assembly seat by just one vote to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate R Seenivasa Sethupathy, the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed.

The results were announced late on Monday with counting of votes continuing for over 30 polling stations in Tirupattur seat.

At the end of a total of 30 rounds of counting, 38-year-old Seenivasa Sethupathy R was officially declared the winner from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam with 83,375 votes against DMK’s Periakaruppan. KR who lost by 83,374 votes by just one vote.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Thirumaran KC came third with 29,054 votes.

Meanwhile, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate and former minister KP Munusamy narrowly lost to DMK’s PS Srinivasan by 138 votes in Veppanahalli Assembly segment.

PS Srinivasan polled 74,691 votes against Munusamy’s 74,553 votes, a difference of 138 votes. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate SR Sampangi who got 63,907 votes came third.

TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats marking the rise of actor-politician Vijay’s historic rise in the elections which disrupted the traditional bipolar politics in the state.

In another important development, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami emerged victorious by the largest margin by bagging 98,110 votes among the winning candidates.

He received 1,48,933 votes, defeating independent candidate K Prem Kumar who got 50,823 votes. Since the Election Commission rejected the nomination of TVK’s candidate, TVK has decided to support independent candidate K Prem Kumar in Edappadi Assembly segment.

The DMK won 74 seats in the Assembly elections to become the opposition party in the state assembly. It competed for 164 seats, while its coalition partners competed for the remaining 70 seats.
