In a new profile for The New YorkerFormer President Barack Obama delves into the “difficult” media environment the world faces today, explaining that he does not want to be a frequent commentator on hot-button issues, while revealing that he spends less time than people might think on projects at Higher Ground Productions, his film and television studio.
The New Yorker It is estimated that the Obamas’ net worth is “certainly in the nine figures” thanks to their deals with Netflix, Spotify and Audible, as well as sales of their books and speeches.
Obama said The New Yorker Peter Slevin said that if he responded to every outrageous thing President Trump says or does, it would weaken his influence and influence as a former president.
“For me, to act like Jon Stewart, even once a week, just go out and tear apart what was going on — which, by the way, I’m glad Jon is doing — I’m not a political leader, I’m a commentator,” Obama told Slevin. “The media environment is so difficult that people don’t even know all the things I do, right?” He said. “And I think when they see me, the implication is: Well, why doesn’t he do it every day instead of just during the midterms, or during the gerrymandering referendum campaign, or what have you?”
Instead, Obama made a strategic choice to pick and choose when and where he spoke, a move his longtime adviser David Plouffe says is intended to be effective in the current media environment.
“The people who will be decisive in the next election are not looking for information about politics, they are confronting it,” Plouffe said. “Obama will talk about things, and there will be videos that are interesting to people, because it’s not like a political speech.”
The former president also revealed that he only spends about 10 percent of his time at Higher Ground Productions, which has a deal with Netflix (for now), and in some cases he takes the time to send notes to the director or creative team. Time may be less than some think in Hollywood, where the pace of projects is a natural consequence of their relevance.
“He is strong and direct but always calm.” a job said director Caroline Soh. “He was very respectful of the fact that this is what we all do for a living.”
Obama responded to a meme shared by President Trump earlier this year that depicted the former president and his wife as monkeys by ignoring it.
“I don’t take it personal,” Obama said. “I mean I’m always offended when my wife and kids get dragged into things, because they didn’t choose this. … That’s the line that even people whose politics I strongly disapprove of, I expect them to care about. I would never talk about someone’s family that way.”
He added: “I mean I am a fair target. Yes, do not hesitate to attack me, because I am your size.”
