As of 7:30 pm, Vijay’s TVK had won 59 seats and was leading in 48 others, winning 107 seats in total. Vijay’s entry as TVK leader made the election a three-corner battle in a state where politics had long been centered around alliances led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

In the pictures shared by news agency ANI, supporters of the TVK chief can be seen surrounding his car and showering flower petals on it to celebrate the party’s performance in the Tamil Nadu elections.

Earlier, his family members cheered and clapped as the party emerged as the single largest force in the state. The celebration was held at the family home.

Party workers also gathered outside the headquarters in Chennai on Monday. Large groups waved flags and distributed sweets in celebration of the party show.

How will Vijay form the government in Tamil Nadu?

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has 234 seats. The party needs to cross the majority mark of 118 to form the government.

There are fears that the state will witness a hung assembly if no party reaches the required number. According to the latest trends, TVK still needs at least 11 more seats to reach a majority.

Since the party contested alone, it may now need support from smaller parties associated with either the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance or the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.

So far, TVK has rejected any opportunity to cooperate with either side, still hoping to form the government on its own.
