During his election campaign in Panihati, he framed the 2026 Assembly elections as a struggle against “corruption and systematic manipulation of evidence”, directly challenging the current TMC regime and the BJP’s alternative narrative.

His campaign focused largely on local infrastructure, the plight of shuttered industries along the Barrackpore main road, and the “gritty” voting environment. If elected, Dasgupta promised to advocate for strengthening municipal security and revitalizing the healthcare network in Panihati.

Who is Kalatan Dasgupta?

Kalatan Dasgupta is an alumnus of the University of Calcutta, where he obtained his BA (Hons) degree from Hiramba Chandra College in 2006.

His political journey in student activism began with SFI and progressed to the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). Unlike many of his contemporaries, Dasgupta spent his entire adult life as a “full-time party adherent”, working as a social activist with no special vocation.

He gained national recognition during the 2024 RJ Carr Medical College protests, where he became a vocal voice for institutional accountability and public safety.

Dasgupta is married to a state-subsidized university teacher, and his income remains the family’s primary support while he focuses on grassroots mobilization full-time.

His affidavit for the 2026 election lists several pending criminal cases related to “rioting” and “obstruction of public officials” during various political movements.

About Dasgupta’s opponents

Tirthankar Ghosh (Trinamool Congress): He is the TMC candidate from Panihati, and is the son of outgoing MLA Nirmal Ghosh. The Transitional Military Council is struggling to retain this seat, which it has held since 2011.

Ratna Debnath (Bharatiya Janata Party): The BJP candidate’s electoral contest has attracted huge attention at the state level, pitting the fight on issues of justice and women’s safety.

Around Panihati Circle

Panihati constituency, a suburban industrial hub in North 24 Parganas, is witnessing one of the most competitive triangular battles in the state.

Voting in Panihati was held as the second phase of the state Assembly elections on April 29, 2026, with Dasgupta banking on a massive surge in the “silent youth vote” to break the long-standing dualism between TMC and BJP.

What happened in 2021?

This is the first major parliamentary election for Kalatan Dasgupta, who has traditionally focused on organizational and street-level politics rather than legislative roles. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Panihati seat was won by TMC’s Nirmal Ghosh, who defeated BJP’s Sanmoy Bandyopadhyay. A difference of 25,177 votes. The Left-Congress alliance had finished third by a large margin in that session.
