Including Valtha, West Bengal has 294 Assembly seats, Tamil Nadu has 243, Kerala has 140-member Assembly, Assam has 126 and Puducherry has 30. While Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry voted in one phase, Bengal witnessed polling in two phases.

Most opinion polls expect the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to win narrowly in West Bengal, a state that has witnessed high political drama after allegations emerged that the electronic voting machine was rigged and malfunctioned when the final stage of voting ended. In Assam too, exit polls favor the BJP, predicting that the party will win a third consecutive term. In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front may oust the Pinarayi Vijayan government from power, according to some exit polls. Timing of election results: The Election Commission of India is expected to start counting votes for elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at 8 am today and the picture may become clearer by the evening. The counting process will begin with postal ballots and move to electronic voting machines (EVMs) after about 30 minutes.

What is the sign of majority in all places? In the 294-member Bengal Legislative Assembly, the magic number to ensure victory is 148. The majority mark is 118 in Tamil Nadu, 71 in Kerala, 64 in Assam and 16 in Puducherry.

How many candidates are in the fray? In West Bengal, 2,926 candidates participated in the competition during the two phases of the elections. In Tamil Nadu, the number was 4,023. In Assam, 722 candidates participated in the elections, 883 candidates in Kerala, and 294 candidates in Puducherry. In Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, elections were held on April 9, and Tamil Nadu went to the polls on April 23, along with West Bengal, which saw the first phase of elections on the same day. The final stage was held in Bengal on 29 April.

Some key constituencies: In Bengal, some of the major seats are Bhabanipur, Nandigram, Behrampur, Samsirganj and Panihati. In Tamil Nadu, some of the major seats are Edappadi, Tiruchirappalli East, Kolathur, Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar and Coimbatore South. In Assam, some of the major seats are Persingh Garwa, Srijangram, Dibrugarh, Dispur and Jalukbari. In Kerala, some of the major seats are Dharmadam, Peravur, Beypore, Nemom, Palakkad, and others. In Puducherry, some of the important seats are Manadipattu, Thattanchavadi, Usodu, Indiranagar, Muthialpet, and others.
