CV Anand, India’s top police officer in Hyderabad, on Friday took charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana, succeeding DGP P Shivadhar Reddy who retired on Thursday after attaining superannuation.

Anand, a 1991 batch IPS officer, received a ceremonial guard of honor from senior officers at the state police headquarters. He was selected from a panel of three senior officers who were cleared by the Center last week.
Speaking after assuming office, Anand said his focus will be on deploying latest technologies including artificial intelligence and drones in crime control, traffic management and road safety.
He said that anti-drug committees would be formed in educational institutions to curb drugs and narcotics. He promised to establish the police department as a brand that brings revolutionary changes in the country.
“There will be special monitoring of cyber crimes, food adulteration and land grabbing. As part of departmental reforms, efforts will be made to hire around 5,000 new officers to address staff shortage,” the new DG said, adding that he would initiate steps to improve coordination among officers.
Anand has held several key positions, including Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad (2013-2016), and later served as Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad. He was promoted as Additional DGP in 2017 and has held several top positions in the state administration.
Meanwhile, Shivadhar Reddy was appointed as State Security Advisor to the government on Thursday, soon after his retirement from the post of Director General.
Reddy, who will have the position and rank of Secretary General to the government, will advise the government on issues related to police, law and order, internal security, crime control, drug control and road safety for a period of three years from the date of his assumption of charge, a government order said.
