Bhubaneswar, President Draupadi Murmu on Friday paid tribute to writer Raghunath Murmu on his birth anniversary, stating that through his foresight, he gave identity to the Santali language.

Raghunath Murmu, who developed the Ol Chiki script for the Santali language, was born in 1905 in Dandbose village near Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.
“On the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, the creator of the first Czech script for the Santali language, I humbly pay tribute to him. Through his foresight and creativity, he gave a new identity to the Santali language,” the President said in a social media post.
Chief Murmu, who also hails from Rairangpur district, said that through the text of the first Czech, education, literature and expression in the Santali language were strengthened and the overall development of the Santal community gained momentum.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also belongs to the Santal community, paid floral tributes at the statue of the icon near the assembly complex.
“On this jayanti of the eminent Santali writer, great reformer, and creator of the first Czech script, Guru Jhumki Pandit Raghunath Murmu, my heartfelt and sincere greetings. His contribution in protecting cultural identity and giving the Santali language distinct recognition on the global stage is unparalleled,” he said in a social media post.
“Let us pledge on this holy day to preserve our rich cultural heritage with its ideals as we strive to build a prosperous society,” he added.
Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik also paid tribute to the icon.
“My respectful tribute on the birth anniversary of the eminent Santali poet and creator of the first Czech script, Pandit Raghunath Murmu. His unparalleled contribution to the enrichment of language and literature along with the advancement of the Santali community will forever remain a source of inspiration,” he said.
