“Running Point” Stars Kate Hudson and Brenda Song in Isla and Ali Season 2: “We Have Our Own Love Story”

In the third episode of Running pointIn the newly released second season, Kate Hudson laments that she didn’t have many girlfriends while growing up.

“My mother taught me that all women were a threat,” she recalls out loud while looking back at college. The current president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team explains that it wasn’t until college that she made her first friend, Ali, played by Brenda Song.

The duo was a key part of the first season, but as the comedy series — produced and created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen — expands into its second season, which is now airing, things have gotten a little rocky for Ali and Isla.

“It’s always fun to do flashback stuff like this. It really complements your character because we can talk about it and imagine our backstory, but filming these scenes and seeing our younger selves was so much fun,” Song explains.

The actresses can’t stop emphasizing how much fun they had filming the flashback scenes, which Stassen and the crew clearly did their research in order to make it as accurate to Hudson and Song as possible. “For the beer pong scene, I was wearing the outfit I had,” Hudson says. Song adds that exploring storylines like Ali and Isla’s history is the beauty of getting a second season. “The foundation is set, and you can do this kind of crazy stuff and explore these characters on a different level,” she says. “I feel like Isla and Ali appreciate each other a lot more after the season because you have to work through those kinks in the friendship to get back together.”
