The Press Information Bureau (PIB) debunked a viral social media post claiming a sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices on Wednesday.

The letter, purporting to be an official order from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, claimed that gasoline prices had been raised before $10 per liter and diesel $12.50 per litre.
It also advised citizens to rely only on official government sources for accurate information and avoid sharing unverified content that could cause confusion.
“An order circulating on social media claims to be issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stating that gasoline and diesel prices will increase by a percentage $10 and $12.50 respectively. The Government of India has not issued any such order. Always verify such news only through official government sources,” PIB Fact Check said in its official statement.
The fake documents indicated rising crude oil prices
The fabricated documents claimed that global crude oil prices had risen by more than 100 percent in recent months, leading to a “significant shortfall in recovery” for gasoline and diesel. She stated that this requires an immediate review of retail fuel prices.
A second document, submitted as a notification from the Ministry of Finance, was also distributed alongside. It sought legal support for the alleged increase under the Central Excise Act, 1944.
No change in fuel prices
The authorities confirmed that no adjustments had been made to fuel prices. Prices remain unchanged in major cities, with gasoline priced $94.77 per liter and diesel at a price $87.67 per liter in Delhi. In Mumbai, petrol is sold at a price $103.54 per liter and diesel at a price $90.03 per litre.
