While the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry voted earlier this month, Election Commission guidelines strictly prohibited the publication of any forecasts until the final vote is recorded in Bengal. Starting at 6:30 p.m., a flurry of forecasts will offer a first glimpse at the likely political landscape of these five regions before the official count begins on May 4.

What are exit polls?

Exit polls are forecasts made by surveying agencies based on voter feedback collected immediately after their ballots are cast. Their purpose is to estimate voting patterns and provide an early indication of likely election outcomes.

Respondents are typically asked which party they voted for, as well as demographic details such as age, gender and community. This helps analysts identify broader voting trends and shifts in public sentiment.

These early estimates are intended to gauge public sentiment ahead of official results, although their accuracy has often been the subject of debate and scrutiny in previous elections.

When will the poll forecasts be released?

Opinion poll forecasts for the current election cycle will not be released until after the official restriction period ends, in accordance with European Commission guidelines.

The Election Commission has clearly defined a “silence period” during which the results of the voter poll cannot be published or broadcast. According to the rules, media organizations are prohibited from conducting or publishing exit polls from 7:00 AM on April 9 to 6:30 PM on April 29.

This means that opinion poll results for all five regions participating in the current election cycle cannot be published until after 6:30 pm on April 29.

The authorities also warned that any violation of this rule is a crime punishable by imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.

Where to watch exit polls live

Once restrictions are lifted, exit poll results will be widely available across multiple platforms. Viewers can follow updates through:

  • TV news channels.
  • Official websites of polling agencies.
  • The social media handles of the survey organizations were verified.

Among the major polling agencies expected to publish their forecasts include Axis My India, CVoter, Jan Ki Baat, IPSOS and Today’s Chanakya.

You can also follow poll forecasts on Hindustan Times website.

Hindustan Times will provide live coverage, in-depth analysis and constituency forecasts on its dedicated election pages, including coverage of the West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry elections.

How to conduct exit polls

Exit polls rely on organized field surveys conducted outside polling stations. Trained teams collect responses using closed-ended questionnaires to ensure consistency and clarity.

Sampling is done across urban and rural areas to obtain a representative voter base. Once the data is collected, analysts process the information to identify patterns and forecast potential seat shares for different parties or coalitions.
