Rain and thunderstorms hit Delhi-NCR; Bring relief from extreme heat

Delhi woke up to strong winds, rain and thunderstorms early on Wednesday morning, as the weather took a sharp turn from the past few days to bring some relief from the rising temperatures.

Other areas of the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, also witnessed similar weather on Wednesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for Delhi, which is valid till around 8.30 am. Gurgaon and Faridabad are also under yellow alert, while the MeT department has issued orange warning for Noida and Ghaziabad.

Other districts in western Uttar Pradesh, including Bulandshahr, Meerut, Hapur and Haryana districts like Jhajjar, Rewari, Rohtak, Mahendragarh and others, were under orange alert on Wednesday morning.

This shift in weather in and around Delhi comes a day after the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, April 28.

The meteorological bulletin issued on Tuesday stated that the maximum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday will range between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature will range from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius.

It also said that on Wednesday, Delhi may witness periods of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds of 30-40 kilometers per hour during the afternoon and evening.

Similar weather may continue on Thursday as well, with the Meteorological Department predicting cloudy skies, light rain and thunderstorms in Delhi NCR for another day, before the weather returns to normal later in the week.

Weather forecast for the rest of India

IMD forecast that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim.

She also said that some parts of West Bengal may also witness heavy rains on Wednesday as the state votes for the second phase of assembly elections in 142 seats.

A thunderstorm with hailstorm is also likely to occur at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 40-50 kmph may also hit isolated areas over Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha on Wednesday.
