With Bridges D and E now open for operational traffic, all five bridges of the double-decker Central Silk Board Bridge are ready for operation. The bridge, the first road and rail structure in South India, has brought much-awaited relief to thousands of passengers. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. It will build the five bridges as part of its larger contract for the elevated metro project along the Outer Ring Road and Central Silk Board Interchange.

“The Central Silk Board Bridge stands as a testament to engineering excellence in the face of extraordinary complexity,” said Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Chairman, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. “Building a five-level structure in the middle of Bengaluru’s second busiest road junction requires precision, perseverance and innovation. With all the bridges ready for operation, we are proud to deliver not only infrastructure, but also meaningful relief to hundreds of thousands of commuters every day.”
As part of the Blue Line, Afcons Infrastructure Limited is constructing the 9.8 km-long elevated section of the Silk Board – KR Puram (Phase 2A) project of Bengaluru Metro, which includes decongestion at the Central Silk Board Junction.
Dr. said. Murugadasan, Executive Vice President (Department Head) at Afcons, said that due to heavy traffic at the intersection most of the day, and space constraints with combinations of existing and ongoing flyovers and metro structures, the works have to be planned and executed in a sequential manner, and construction activity can be carried out for only five hours a day, between 12am and 5am midnight.
“All five bridges are now operational, and commuters can save at least 30 minutes of travel time. Among the five bridges, Bridge D is the longest with a height of 28 metres. It is located at the fifth level, crossing the existing Hosur Bridge, Yellow Line Metro and the double-decker bridge. Despite heavy traffic volumes and limited working space due to the presence of Rajakaluv located on one side and 3 operational flyovers (Hosur Bridge, A flyover and C flyover), he said. Ambareesh, Project Director: “CSB station is under construction (Blue Line). The team has successfully completed all the bridges meticulously.”
The Central Silk Board Interchange is the second busiest traffic point in the city after Hebbal, and the construction of flyovers A, B, C, D and E that together span 3.2 km has eased traffic congestion at the intersection. Three flyovers (A, B and C) will be opened in mid-2024 to facilitate travel from Ragigudda and BTM towards HSR Layout and Electronic City by bypassing the Silk Board signal.
With the remaining bridges (D and E) now operational, passengers traveling from HSR to BTM can bypass the Silk Board entirely. The signal will henceforth mainly serve HSR-Madivala and Electronic City-HSR traffic, resulting in significant decongestion.
The bridge system includes:
Flyover A: Ragigudda Metro Station to Hosur Road
Flyover B: BTM layout to Hosur Road and HSR layout across Flyover A
Flyover C: Branch from Flyover A towards HSR layout
D & E Bridges: Newly opened, from HSR Layout to Ragigudda, with flyover down for BTM Layout.
