Mitchell Santner and Mahela Jayawardene
The one-sided encounter at the Wankhede Stadium has turned into a major talking point after Mumbai Indians’ controversial use of a concussion substitute during their 103-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026.While Sanju Samson’s unbeaten century and Akhil Hossain’s four-wicket haul led CSK to a huge win, the spotlight turned to the unusual introduction of Shardul Thakur as a concussion replacement for Mitchell Santner.
Shardul to Santner: MI coach Jayawardene explains the decision
Santner suffered an injury in the 17th while completing a low catch, apparently hurting his shoulder. However, television replays later indicated that his head also hit the ground. He was subsequently taken for tests and did not return to the field.Speaking about the controversy, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene defended the decision.“Santner hit his head first, then the neck and obviously the shoulder as well. Then he went for a scan. As soon as he came back, he was lying down.
“Yes, there was ice on his shoulder, but he felt it was unstable, so we took him for a check-up in that case,” Jayawardene said.“We have asked for a substitution for concussion. This is at the discretion of the match referee and the officials. They have allowed Shardul Thakur. That is what it is. But hopefully Santner’s injury is not too bad. Once he returns, we will take a look at it,” he added. However, that explanation did little to silence the debate, as many questioned whether the apparent shoulder injury warranted a concussion replacement.
IPL 2026 rules vs reality: Decision raises eyebrows
As per IPL rules, teams must nominate potential concussion replacements before the match, covering roles such as batsman, bowler and all-rounder. The final decision rests with the match referee, who likewise guarantees the substitution.Despite this framing, the scene of the situation – especially with Santner later seen wearing a sling – sparked widespread debate.

MI’s struggle continues despite the positives
Controversy aside, MI suffered another disappointing outing.
“We only got four points from seven matches. I’m disappointed to lose this match,” Jayawardene admitted.“We lost our rhythm in the two power plays, first with the ball and then with the bat… As a team we all have to improve.”He also reflected on the decision to chase: “We discussed it and felt comfortable chasing. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”Jayawardene found a positive side in the young Allah Ghazanfar, saying: “He is very brave and is maturing with time… We will continue to support him.”With CSK climbing to the IPL 2026 table with a dominant win, MI not only grappled with defeat – but a decision that sparked one of the biggest debates of the season.
