NEW DELHI: Amid reports that Nepal may soon impose customs duties on goods carried by people traveling from India to that country, the Foreign Office said on Thursday that New Delhi remains engaged with Kathmandu on the development.

This was stated by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in response to a query during his weekly press conference here.
“We have also seen some reports of Nepali authorities implementing the pre-existing provision limiting the collection of customs duties from cross-border travelers if they carry goods purchased in India of course, worth more than Nepalese Rs 100,” he said.
“We understand that the government of Nepal took this step primarily with the aim of curbing informal trade and smuggling. We have also seen a statement by a senior Nepali official stating that civilians carrying personal or household goods will not be obstructed. We remain engaged in these developments,” Jaiswal said.
He was asked about multiple videos circulating on social media that allegedly indicate that customs duties may soon be imposed on goods carried by people while traveling from India to Nepal.
He said that there are some reports and news that the Nepal government will soon impose customs duties on goods carried by people traveling from India to Nepal. “This provision is not new, but it is being implemented now,” Jaiswal added.
“I would also like to mention that a senior Nepalese official stated that people traveling from India to Nepal with personal or household items for personal use will not face any obstruction or action,” he said.
For those traveling from India to Nepal and carrying items for their personal use, and if the goods are for personal or household use, “no customs duty will apply,” Jaiswal said, adding, for the rest, “we are in discussions with the Nepal government on this issue.”
