HIDDEN FOR 50 YEARS: A Cold War nuclear bunker has been found beneath Scarborough Castle

Archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery within the historic grounds of Scarborough Castle, finding a Cold War nuclear bunker that had been hidden from view for nearly 50 years, beneath the historic grounds of Scarborough Castle.

This military bunker was built as part of the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) surveillance system in 1963 to detect and report nuclear explosions during an intense period of international conflict. The hideout was one of over 1,500 sites across the UK, and its exact location was lost when it closed in 1968, after being in operation for around 5 years. The location of the bunker was identified after a comprehensive examination of historical records, combined with modern methods such as ground penetrating radar, and is now available for public viewing, providing a unique perspective on how the UK prepared for a potential nuclear attack.

A Cold War bunker has been found hidden under Scarborough Castle

According to English Heritage, the design of the bunker accommodated three volunteers from the Republic of China, who were tasked with monitoring nuclear explosions and tracking radioactive fallout, particularly from nuclear explosions occurring over the North Sea, due to the potential for tidal spikes caused by such explosions. The site is a large concrete building, made largely of reinforced brick and designed to withstand the effects of a nuclear blast, although it also lacked any type of heating to provide comfort to those who served there.

Scarborough’s military history through the ages

For thousands of years, the highest point of Scarborough Castle has been used as an important lookout point. Bronze Age settlements on this high point; The Romans built signal stations to use the high point to signal nearby settlements and fortified those settlements in the Middle Ages. By the 20th century, this strategic point in relation to national defense was still in use with a concrete bunker having been installed by 1963.

According to English Heritage, although the vault was flooded almost to the ceiling, the variable water level within the vault kept other internal structures in very good condition, such as the wooden door, which remained solid and appeared to have a fresh coat of paint.

The development of the Republic of China from aircraft discovery to nuclear surveillance

The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was a civilian defense organization that had a major influence on British military history. Initially formed to monitor aircraft during the World Wars, the organization then adapted to monitor nuclear threats during the Cold War era. Volunteers at the Scarborough site, as part of the UK Warning and Monitoring organisation, used their tools to map ground zero and determine radiation levels.

The discovery of this site is part of a much larger project to mark the centenary of the Royal Observer Corps, and to highlight a part of the National Service that has received little recognition for the service and sacrifice of its members.
