Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron has opened up like never before about the night her mother shot her father after he tried to kill them both.In a recent interview with The New York Times, published on Saturday, the actress spoke frankly about the painful incident.
Speaking about why she told her story, she said: “I think these things should be talked about because they make others not feel alone.
When this happened to us, I thought we were the only people. “These things don’t haunt me anymore.”

Theron, now 50, recalled the incident which happened when she was just 15 years old. She said her mother, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Martez, had returned home after visiting a relative when tensions escalated with her father, Charles Theron.
She recounted the chain of events that led up to the shooting at her home, and said she “knew something bad was going to happen.”

According to Theron, her father “broke into the house” and shot “through the steel doors to get in, explaining that he was going to kill us.”“The message was very clear: ‘I’m going to kill you tonight,'” she said. Do you think I can’t enter this door? Watch me. I’ll go to the safe. “I’ll get the gun.”

The actress also described the moment her mother responded by saying that her father and another man who was present had been shot. “The brother ran into the hallway, and I fired one bullet into the hallway that ricocheted seven times and shot him in the hand. Those are things you can’t explain. Then I followed my father, who at that time was opening the safe to get more guns out, and I shot him.”Authorities eventually ruled the shooting an act of self-defense, and Gerda Martez faced no charges.After the shooting, Theron said her mother sent her to school the next morning. “It was like, ‘We’ll move forward.’ Not necessarily the healthiest thing, but it worked for us.”
