At least three students were injured in a shooting near the University of Iowa early Sunday morning, police said.The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 100 block of East College Street in downtown Iowa City at approximately 1:46 a.m. (US local time) after receiving a report of a large fight.
Officers arriving at the scene heard gunfire.The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear. The video circulating on social media appears to show a confrontation involving a large group, with several individuals punching and kicking others while bystanders urged them to stop. Additional video shows a large crowd of people fleeing the scene after the shooting.
First responders reported at least four people with gunshot wounds, according to traffic recordings provided by Broadcastify, NBC News reported.
Police said several victims were taken to local hospitals, but did not confirm the total number of injured.A University of Iowa Health Care spokesperson confirmed that the accident patients had been received and were being evaluated, but did not provide updates on their conditions.University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed in a statement that three students had been infected. The university also issued alerts urging people to avoid the area.
“As we wait for additional information, my thoughts are with these students, their families, their friends and all the people who care about them,” Wilson said. “I hold them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.
“No arrests have been made, and police are asking anyone with information to contact the department. The investigation is ongoing.“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” said Kim Reynolds, who offered all of the state’s resources to assist in the investigation.
