Shatrughan Sinha tells Gulshan Grover: 'You should have played Akshaye Khanna's Rahman Dhakaite in Dhurandhar': 'Even I agree with that'

Gulshan Grover, who is currently promoting his upcoming series Matka King, believes cinema is having a full-on moment – with a strong return of trends, characters and storytelling styles from the past. The actor also shared a recent anecdote from a dinner party with industry experts, including Shatrughan Sinha, Rakesh Roshan, and Shashi Ranjan. He also revealed how Sinha imagined him in the role of Akshaye Khanna’s Rahman Dhakaite in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar.

Gulshan Grover, who is currently promoting his upcoming series Matka King, believes cinema is having a full-on moment – with a strong return of trends, characters and storytelling styles from the past.Speaking about how old trends are making a comeback, Grover pointed out that nostalgia is shaping fashion and movies today.“We wear bell bottoms these days – everything is coming back. A lot of great songs are coming back as remakes. The shows are coming back,” he told India Today.

The actor also shared a recent anecdote from a dinner party with industry experts, including Shatrughan Sinha, Rakesh Roshan, and Shashi Ranjan.“Two days ago, Shatrughan Sinha, who plays strong, anti-hero characters, Rakesh Roshan, Shashi Ranjan, was there – we were having dinner. So, I walked in late, and he (Sinha) said: ‘I’ve seen Dhurandhar.’ Gulshan Grover, this was a film you should have been there in,” Grover said.He further revealed how Sinha envisioned him in a lead role.“He (Sinha) even said how great it would be if I played Rehman Duckett, Akshaye Khanna’s role. So, I said, even I agree with that,” he said.

“Those era characters are back.”

Using Dhurandhar as a reference point, Grover emphasized how elements of old cinema are making a comeback.“I make this reference about how many characters have come back to the modern era. Even some of the settings, the drums, everything that was there in every movie, came back. It was the time, and it didn’t show any progression,” the actor added.

Directed by Aditya Dhar and opposite Ranveer Singh, Dhurandhar has made history at the global box office.

The two films, Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, together crossed the Rs 3,000-crore mark worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film franchise to date.The combined global collection now stands at over Rs 3,019 crore, surpassing the previous benchmark set by SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali series, which earned Rs 2,438 crore globally. Other major franchises like Pushpa, led by Allu Arjun, and Prashanth Neel’s KGF, starring Yash, followed with Rs 2,221 crore and Rs 1,453 crore respectively.
