Sony Pictures revealed the news Monday night in Las Vegas at the launch of CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theater operators and Hollywood studios designed to generate excitement and support for summer tentpoles and other 2026 event pictures.

Grandgerthe first English-language film from the Oscar-winning Japanese director, will hit theaters on February 18, 2028. Abrams’ Bad Robot producer JJ has teamed up with Yamazaki on the project, sparking a major bidding war in late 2024.

The previous year, Yamazaki Godzilla minus one It turned into a box office sensation, grossing $113 million worldwide against a budget of just $15 million. Among other landmarks, Minus one It became the first film in the sprawling Godzilla franchise to win an Academy Award when it took home the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It also became the highest-grossing Japanese film in North America, not adjusted for inflation.

Yamazaki has another movie waiting to open – Godzilla minus zero. Toho, home of the series, will open the picture in Japan on November 3, with a US release handled by GKids quickly following.

“Beyond Hollywood, even the possibility of standing on this stage seems far-fetched,” Yamazaki said during his visual effects victory speech. “The moment we were nominated, we felt like Rocky Balboa was welcomed into the ring as equals by our biggest competitor, which was truly a miracle. But, here we stand!”

Yamazaki writes and directs Grandger For Columbia Pictures. Abrams and Bad Robot’s Glenn Zipper serve as producers.
